A. Activity Planner/ workbench

Picture
The activities work bench runs from this planner.
It offers you the ability to plan for a week, with the drop down menus making it quick and easy. The more topics, themes and festivals that you add into the drop down list, will be there for reference at a later date.
The days of the week are built in, with the option to use the drop down menu to select the area of curriculum that you will be focusing on for that day/ planned activity.
You are also able to use the drop down menu to choose the children from your setting (from the children programmed into the database) who will be present for the activity.
You can then make comments or observations against the children who participated, which you could copy and paste to other areas of the database at a more convenient time.

Further Focus

The activity that you decide to plan for that day can be determined by the criteria that you have previously selected as further focus.

You can bring up this information with a button and look at each child specifically.

If a child that you are caring for has a lot of further focus on one area, you may want to choose an activity that has an aspect to build on that area.

Alternatively, you can open up the further focus criteria that have been selected for all of the children, that has been ordered into the area of the curriculum. So, by scrolling down through the areas, you may see that there are a lot of children who have mathematical development selected.

Thus, offering a suggestion that you could choose an activity that has a mathematical attribute.

These forms will be updated as you remove or add further focus criteria for each child via the assessment part of the database.

List of Activities with shopping list

Another button that is within the planner, is a list of activities. There will be some activity suggestions in this planner, which you can leave in, remove or change.

This list is editable, so you can add as many new activity ideas that you wish. This is a great resource to have as it is easily accessible, so any new ideas that you come across whilst on courses, talking to other professionals, parents or activity ideas from different forums etc, can all be added, quickly and easily, to your list of activities for future reference.

There is an option for you to include a picture of the activity (which could mirror the activity pictures that you use elsewhere in your setting).

You can then tick the areas of the curriculum that you feel this activity could potentially encourage development within.

There is a shopping list available with this form, where you can list the resources that you would use for each activity, you can then select whether you have a high quantity of each resource needed, whether you are running low, or if you have fun out.

This will feed through to the next form.

Activities by area and shopping list report

When choosing the activity, if you have followed the steps above, and decided that your children have some mathematical development that could be encouraged, or that you would like to make an observation on, then you could open up the activity list, that has automatically been ordered into areas of the curriculum. This has been fed from the ticks that you have placed in the list of activities (above).

You could then scroll straight to the area of Mathematics, and choose an activity from that list, taking into consideration the age, interest and ability of each child who is due to be present.

Alongside each activity, you can see your supply of resources needed, which may also influence your choice- or prompt a shopping trip!

The planning that you complete, through using this work bench, can be printed or saved as a PDF and stored on your PC. You can also reflect further on the different activities that you carry out using the 'Activity reflection log', you can also link observations to individual children's learning journey reports, or decide to add resources for the next time that you offer that activity.

The planner can grow with your business, as once you have been using it for a while, the repertoire of topics, themes and activities, will be of such that you can draw on these for consecutive years.
