29. Staff Appraisals

This form is done 6 monthly/ annually, and the main outcome is to improve the staff member in order to benefit the business

The aim of an appraisal is to continuously improve the performance of individuals and that of the setting.

Appraisals are an important work tool between the childminder and the assistants. It is an active and on going assessment of the employee's performance, development and potential needs. The appraisal gives both the employee and the employer the opportunity to reflect on the employee's overall performance in the workplace. What has been achieved, what is in progress, any additional support that they may require and plans for their next steps.

Picture
Prior to the formal appraisal, preparation should be done by both parties. The childminder should look at objectives set at any previous appraisals (which can be done using the navigation buttons to view previous forms).
To get the best out of staff appraisals you need to:
• Be prepared

• Work to a clear structure

• Use positive feedback

• Let the employee do the talking

• Invite self-appraisal and evaluate performance not personality

• Encourage analysis of performance, don't deliver unexpected criticisms

• Agree measurable objectives and create a plan of action
There should be an outcome from an appraisal that improves the situation for both the childminder and the assistant. Point out what the individual has achieved and ensure employees go away from the appraisal feeling good about themselves and involved in their own development.
